Your Body Is Listening. Be Kind.
Nov 13, 2022Have you ever eaten too much and then spent time beating yourself about it?
Me? Oh, pretty much every holiday season and some vacations and some weekends, and, oh, when I was constantly exhausted from solo parenting while my husband worked in another city.
So...um, you could say it was all. the. time.
“Ok, diet starts Monday,” I’d tell myself.
And I would start the cycle of counting calories or points or packing meals into colorful portion-sized containers or using some fitness app.
I just knew I’d lose weight if I could figure out how to “control” my eating.
And you can probably guess by this point that none of that ever worked for me. Sure, I’d drop a few pounds, but I would pick them back up in a few weeks, and sometimes sooner.
Then I came across an idea that seemed revolutionary: what if I started caring for my body like a beloved friend?
What if I worked on my relationship with my body — being kind to it, listening to it?
What if I listened when my tummy bloated after eating some not so great food or paid attention when I woke up in the middle of the night with a racing heart after drinking too much?
What if I started moving my body in ways that felt good and not like a punishment for what I ate?
What happened was I discovered ways to tune into my body’s natural hunger cues and to care for my body in simple ways that felt, well...doable.
I learned to care for the body I have and not wait until I was a smaller size to take care of it. And then...I lost weight.
Now I help other women to take loving care of their bodies and to lose weight for the last time.
What would happen if you started listening to your body? What does she need, my love?
