What happens when you don't want to?
Mar 12, 2022A huge part of easy, sustainable weight loss is finding habits we like and that we want to keep doing.
But what happens on those days when we just don’t want to?
When we don’t want to prep that meal?
When we don’t want to eat the meal we planned?
When we don’t want to move our body?
When we don’t want to keep our word to ourselves?
When we just. don’t. feel. like. it?
It’s a common misconception that people who succeed at weight loss have great “will power” and somehow just will themselves through days like this.
That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
As a coach, I help my clients become women who make weight loss inevitable.
And that happens with our actions and, more importantly, with our thinking.
The first part of that equation is reminding ourselves that days like these are 100 percent normal.
We can pause and remind ourselves that we all have days when we just don’t want to.
The second part is having a strategy for how you’ll respond in these moments.
Start by asking yourself “what’s an easy choice I can make?”
Maybe it’s taking an easy walk instead of the workout you planned.
Maybe it’s picking up a healthy-ish takeout meal.
Maybe it’s simply reminding yourself “we won’t always feel like it. I’m going to prep this meal anyway because I’m practicing being the person who keeps promises to herself.”
If that last thought feels impossible to you…think about using a thought ladder that I shared a couple of weeks ago.
Using a thought ladder, we take baby steps towards developing the thinking we want in those moments that are hard.
Because the stressful days at work or those pull-out-your-hair parenting days aren’t going anywhere.
Who are we willing to be – for ourselves – in the middle of those messy, full days?
