The eating tool that works -- even at the holidays!

emotional eating hunger Nov 20, 2022

One of the simplest skills I teach my clients is to eat when they’re hungry, and to stop eating when they’re satisfied.

It’s not rocket science.

But very few of us are used to such a simple approach to eating.

And very few of us are used to paying attention to our hunger

We eat for a lot of reasons that don’t involve hunger.

Things like….

It’s time to eat!

Ooooh, that sounds good.

I feel like eating something.

I better eat now, so I’m not hungry when I’m in the middle of (blank).

I deserve a treat.

It’s the holidays…

One more won’t hurt.

All of these statements are simply thoughts we might have.

And we might be used to eating when we have them.

If we’re not hungry when we begin eating, then what we’re really doing is feeding our thoughts -- feeding our minds -- and not really our bodies.

Some of us eat when we have strong feelings -- when we’re happy, sad, ashamed, frustrated, mad, etc.

We might even connect to the idea of being an emotional eater.

But most of us don’t take the time to step back and just notice when we eat for reasons other than hunger that seem. so. normal.

And those small places where we do that might be the only reason we aren’t seeing the results we want.

Weight loss is just a formula and we each just need to solve for the element that is keeping us from losing weight simply and sustainably.

For some of us, it’s working on the feelings that drive us to eat.

For others, it’s these pesky little sentences like “it’s time to eat.”

How we choose to respond to this new awareness is where our coaching work comes in -- and how we develop new, sustainable habits.

And the good news? You can eat some of the holiday treats you love if you eat when you’re hungry, and stop when satisfied.

Yep, it’s true.
